Children's Literature -
Have you ever wanted to smell exactly how raunchy the Middle Ages were? This scratch-and-sniff books attempts to take you on a noxious tour of ancient history but fails on every level. Cartoon-like drawings and a light-hearted text attempt to describe the grimmer aspects of the centuries from the 1100s to the 1300s. Everything from overcrowding in castles to flea-bitten clothes to the Black Plague is mentioned. However, the format, which can best be described as Richard Scarry gone Goth, is difficult to follow. Meanwhile, there are only three scent-impregnated panels in the book and two of these have indistinct odors. There may be some appeal for middle year boys who will read anything that promises to be "gross." Overall, this is not a necessary purchase except for the sensory-deprived.
