Minor White, the eye that shapes

A distinguished professor and curator at Princeton, Bunnell was a close friend of Minor White, one of the most important photographers in the 30 years following World War II. For this major work and the retrospective exhibition it accompanies (traveling until 1991), Bunnell draws on journals, correspondence, and files of negatives and prints in the extensive Minor White Archive bequeathed to Princeton in 1976. The production is stunning: 295 photographs, ten in color and 285 black-and-whites in duotone, are organized by iconography and by chronology. White's artistry is richly illuminated by the wealth of newly published material and by Bunnell's insightful exploration of biographical elements in the work of this highly personal and spiritual photographer.
