Gr 7 UpIn her usual competent, direct, factual approach, Hyde presents information about children who have been kidnapped, runaways, thrownaways, and those who have died from abuse and neglect and at the hands of strangers and peers. The effects of abductions and runaways on a family, shelters that aim to get children off the streets, and programs designed to get the missing youngsters home are explored. The chapter about death at the hands of strangers and peers chronicles several well-known child abduction/murder cases throughout the world. A section on death by abuse and neglect includes a brief history of infanticide along with recent examples of highly publicized cases. Black-and-white photographs add interest. A list of related organizations with addresses as well as electronic access information is included. This title is similar in approach to Hyde's now-dated Missing Children (Watts, 1985; o.p.). Notably, most of the agencies listed in the l985 publication are not listed here.
