Synopsis
What is a mixture?
Which materials dissolve in water?
When do we use a filter?
Read Mixing and Separating to learn that a mixture can be made of solids, liquids, or gases. Discover how we use mixtures in our lives and how we can separate mixtures using filters and magnets.
Books in the Changing Materials series look at how materials can be changed in various ways. Each book examines materials we commonly encounter and explores their properties through practical and familiar examples. Investigation spreads give readers the chance to find out for themselves how materials can be changed.

AGERANGE: Ages 6 to 9.
Everything from food to clothes is made up of materials. When two or more materials are put together, it becomes a mixture. Macaroni and cheese is a mixture of the pasta and the cheese. Candy bars often are a mixture of caramel, chocolate, and nuts. The materials can be in big pieces or in pieces too small to see. One material mixed with another may even make one of the materials disappear. Hot water mixed with sugar causes the sugar to melt, thus disappearing as a material. Mixtures that are created can again be separated in some cases. Root crops that grow in the dirt can be separated from the dirt by sieving, where small holes in the bottom of a tray allow small particles to go through while retaining the larger particles. Bright photographs and limited text will appeal to young readers. Inset boxes, which are two-by-two inch boxes with the heading "It's A Fact" give additional information. The glossary defines words that are printed in bold type through the text. The index and recommended reading and web sites, as well as places to visit, make this a good research source for elementary students. Three hands-on activities are included in this title. The first is separating items with magnets. The second activity is separating dirt from muddy water. The third shows how to make a mixture with several materials by making a smoothie. This series is a good selection for science classrooms at the elementary level. This series, "Working with Materials," is a good selection for science classrooms at the elementary level. Other titles in the series concern changing materials, shaping materials, and joining materials. Reviewer: Joyce Rice
