Children's Literature
Since the first anthology was so well received, Katz has followed up with More Pocket Poems, 44 poems that are also just right for "Poem in Your Pocket Day." Elementary school children will be introduced to esteemed poets such as John Ciardi, Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, Eve Merriam, Ogden Nash, and Shakespeare, to name a few. The poems move from season to season with language and images that will resonate with their readers. "Put the World in Your Pocket" by Bobbi Katz and an excerpt from "More Opposites" by Richard Wilbur are the bookends for the appropriate and short pocket poems. One of my favorites is "August Ice Cream Cone Poem" by Paul B. Janeczko. Be sure to recite the title of the poem prior to saying this two-word poem: "Lick/quick." To be sure everyone will "get it" give out ice cream cones on a very hot day. From animals to weather, to Halloween ghosts and witches, to interpersonal relationships, and nature's delicious treats, children will enjoy hearing and reciting the poetry found here. Zemke's high-energy illustrations show children interacting with one another, having a good time no matter what the season. Spring pastels lead into summer greens, then turn to autumn golds and purples. Winter blue and white accompany the final seasonal poems. What a terrific way to introduce children to a broad range of poets. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
