Gr 7 Up-A look at the actor's life from his childhood in Mississippi and Chicago to his most recent achievements and films. De Angelis details Freeman's long career that includes Broadway and television as well as movies. She also discusses aspects of her subject's life within the context of the African-American experience in the United States, e.g., the migration of blacks to the North in the first half of the 20th century and racism. The book is illustrated with black-and-white photos, period photographs, and movie stills. Unfortunately, De Angelis's writing tends toward stodginess. Another quibble is that students must look under "Movies," "Television," and "Theater" in the index to locate specific productions. However, this book offers up-to-date information about the actor and will be useful for report writers and curious moviegoers.-Ann W.
