It is quite a sight to watch a group of cyclists roar into town like they do in Washington, DC for the Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Rally and in Galveston Texas for the Lone Star Rally. Most of these people are riding motorcycles because they enjoy them and they dress properly, with leather suits and helmets for protection. Some motorcyclist put on shows, like the famed Evil Knievel and his son Robbie. Robbie does some dangerous stunts like jumping over the Grand Canyon on a motorcycle. For those who want to know about the bike and its parts, there is a good spread with the various components identified. There is a bit of history here--Gottlieb Daimler is credited with building the first motorcycle, and the various uses for motorcycles are detailed, including use as weapons carriers during war and substitutes for horses or other vehicles (including an ambulance) when terrain is rough. Some motorcycles are real works of art, as owners decorate and spruce them up to reflect their tastes. If you like speed, noise and machinery, motorcycles may be worth exploring further. A level 3 book in the "Step into Reading" series aimed at kids who are reading on their own. The photographs are quite eye-catching and boys in particular will probably be drawn to this book.
