Children's Literature
Add this book to a substantial list of other well-written "Health Watch" educational books about various chronic illnesses written specifically for older children. The amount of detail and facts contained in this book make it useful as a primer for adults as well. What makes it so readable for children is that the author explains symptoms, diagnosis, treatments and follow-up in the personal context of a specific woman who is living with multiple sclerosis. Photographs of her and her family prior to the diagnosis as well as while she is living with multiple sclerosis serve to dispel assumptions and stereotypes that only make the coping more difficult for everyone involved. The author has put a human face to text that otherwise would be dry and detached. Illustrations complement the photos, resulting in an in-depth portrayal that could be a valuable resource in school libraries for papers and class discussion. In addition, any family that has been touched by this mysterious and unpredictable illness will find answers here that are understandable and ultimately reassuring. 2001, Enslow, $18.95. Ages 10 up.
