Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Richard Tupler, MD(Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description:This is a collection of more than 370 cases depicted by over 2,000 multimodality images in a case-based review format. The images emphasize advanced imaging and include MRI, CT, US, and nuclear medicine.
Purpose:The stated goal is to offer an efficient and systematic approach to learning musculoskeletal imaging using a case-based approach. Each case highlights the relevant findings in a succinct manner with listed differential diagnoses. Over 70 international experts have submitted an excellent range of cases encompassing both essential concepts and encountered diagnoses. The supplementary icons, a grading system depicting the spectrum of findings from common to rare, have good intentions but seem of questionable practical utility. Using the cases as a knowledge challenge will help readers assess their capabilities on a full range of topics in musculoskeletal imaging. As such, this may be helpful for radiologists preparing for board exams or, alternatively, those looking to hone their diagnostic abilities.
Audience:This book will benefit both seasoned radiologists and residents preparing for the boards. Additionally, it may serve a resource for those in musculoskeletal pathology, rheumatology, and sports medicine.
Features:Because the book is logically organized, it can easily function as a view box reference. The text is concise and accurate, focusing on the findings and differential diagnoses. The strengths of this book include its organization by anatomic location, broad variety of case-based presentations, succinct imaging "pearls" supplemented byrelevant images, and an emphasis on a reasonable differential diagnosis. First organized by body part, the book is then further subdivided by etiology such as congenital, infection, tumor, and trauma, for example, so that readers can quickly find the relevant entity.
Assessment:The book is structured to be accessible and easy to use, and concise enough to be read cover to cover, in a self-test format, in a short period of time. The cases emphasize differential diagnosis to help readers distinguish among diseases and disorders, while the additional images complement the text and imaging considerations, although some ancillary images are of variable quality. With over 70 international contributors, there is some variation in style throughout the book. Nevertheless, its strength lies in the case-based orientation, which is both comprehensive and relevant. Furthermore, each case is supplemented by succinct bullet-point "pearls" which highlight the relevant issues.
