Overview

The imaging methods used to evaluate patients with suspected vertebral injuries have undergone radical changes in the past decade, the most significant being the ascendancy of computed tomography (CT) to become the primary investigative modality. Issues such as high radiation dose associated with CT studies and health care reform and cost containment also have a significant impact on clinical decision-making. This new edition of the classic landmark text for vertebral trauma imaging provides an in-depth discussion on the indications and methods of imaging the spine based on currently available clinical evidence. Every chapter has been extensively revised and the illustrations represent state-of-the-art imaging. A completely new chapter on pediatric injuries has been added. Imaging of Vertebral Trauma, third edition, is an invaluable and essential tool in the assessment of any patient with suspected vertebral or spinal cord injury.

"...this edition has been expanded to nearly twice its original size, inlcuding substantial new chapters on MRI, biomechanics, and vertebral stability and instability...part of the Clinical Diagnsotic Imaging series."

Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Bennett S. Greenspan, MD, MS(Medical College of Georgia)
Description: This excellent review of the evaluation of vertebral injuries is an update of a 1996 edition.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an updated account of the use of imaging methods to evaluate patients with vertebral injuries. The major advance since the previous edition is the widespread use of CT. The book succeeds admirably in meeting the objectives.
Audience: It is written for radiologists, particularly those who are working in emergency radiology, and those wishing to learn more about trauma of the spine. This is an excellent resource for practicing radiologists and radiology residents.
Features: The book begins with definitions, and covers anatomic and biomechanical considerations. It discusses the indications for evaluating these injuries and provides an excellent explanation of the modalities involved. There is an excellent discussion of mechanisms of injury and radiologic considerations. Chapters also address pediatric vertebral injuries and the determination of stability or instability of these injuries. Some of the more common normal variants and pseudofractures are discussed. The book is clearly written and the images and illustrations are excellent. Some of the references could be updated.
Assessment: This is an excellent, well-written book that is a valuable resource for practicing radiologists and radiology residents. The book superbly addresses advances in the field since the previous edition.
