From The Critics

Reviewer: Joel R. Meyer, MD(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This is an atlas of differential diagnoses for a variety of imaging patterns recognized in neuroradiology. Patterns, differential diagnostic considerations, and brief descriptions of the imaging findings and distinguishing features are presented in tabular form opposite images of a variety of entities.
Purpose: The author stresses the importance of pattern recognition for differential diagnosis in imaging of the skull and spine; however, an in-depth of understanding of anatomy and pathology is necessary to understand and appropriately apply the patterns. With the understanding that coverage of anatomy and pathology is limited in this book, the author has met his objectives.
Audience: The book is written for residents, fellows, and practitioners in radiology and the related clinical specialties. It is organized and written at an appropriate level for this audience.
Features: The strengths of the book include excellent reproductions of plain x-ray manifestations of entities involving the skull and spine that are underrepresented in modern imaging texts. In addition, the tables are helpful when imaging findings cannot result in a limited differential diagnosis. The CT and MR examinations are of variable quality; several illustrations are outdated.
Assessment: This provides a collection of illustrated differential diagnoses in neuroradiology. This book will be most useful for residents and fellows as a supplement to standard neuroradiology texts.

Booknews

This volume offers differential diagnoses for a broad spectrum of radiologic patterns involving the skull and spine. Added to these lists are descriptions of the specific imaging findings to be expected for each diagnostic entity as well as differential points to aid the reader in arriving at a precise diagnosis. Numerous illustrations are included to point out the often subtle differences in appearance among conditions that can produce a similar overall radiographic pattern. Annotation c.
