Overview

A beginner's full-color, step-by-step illustrated guide to tying more than fifty useful knots.

What is more memorable than a child first learning to tie his shoes? Or wrapping his first Christmas presents? Knots aren't easy to learn, but they are very helpful—whether you are five years old, ten years old, or even fifty years old. Here is a children's picture book that will help parent and child learn together.

In My First Book of Knots, you'll learn how to tie knots you can use in fishing, camping, ranching, farming, and more. You'll learn how Santa Claus ties up his sack full of presents and how to tie a knot that will make it easy to carry heavy objects. Every step of each knot is drawn out for you and includes clearly written instructions. After you read this book, you can save the day with a square knot and wow your friends with a double figure eight bend.

Synopsis

First Book of Knots combines beautiful, full-color illustrations with clear verbal instructions to teach children a variety of knots for use in boating, camping, fishing, backyard construction, yard-work, and any other recreational pursuit. Assuming no prior knot-tying experience, it also covers domestic knot-tying such as flat ties, bowties, shoelaces, and gift-wrapping. Detailed, full-page illustrations will not only show young readers how to tie and use each knot, but will also make kids of all ages eager to apply their new knowledge. First Book of Knots also includes a brief introductory history of knots and an illustrated list of knot-tying terms.

Children's Literature - Nicole Davis

The knowledge of how to tie a knot is a useful skill to have. Knots have been around for many years, and have helped many people do things like counting weapons, binding things together, sailing, and even tying a bow on a package. This book starts by giving the history of knots. The second section talks about the rope terminology—the terms used to describe the shapes you need to make to tie the knot, as well as the various types of ropes and parts of a rope. This page has many illustrations to explain the text. Over 45 knots are shown and described in this book. Each knot tells a little bit about the history of the knot, as well as how the knot could be useful to someone, followed by visual guidelines to tie the knot. Most of the knots are not described as step by step written instructions, only visual illustrations. There could be several uses for the knots in this book, but the most common ones would be to use this with a scouting group or young people learning to tie knots for camping skills, and someone who is learning how to tie knots for fishing. Both types of knots are explained in detail in this book. Reviewer: Nicole Davis
