String and rope have many uses, and this book discusses them. It describes ines and knots and covers a variety of activities such as rigging sails, tying packages, hanging clothes on a clothesline and sewing buttons.

Gr 5 Up-- Adkins examines myriad forms and uses of line, cord, and string. He discusses and beautifully illustrates in detailed black-and-white pencil drawings both natural and manufactured string and gives step-by-step instructions for tying it properly. In a clear fashion, parts of a generic line generic are described and illustrated before readers are introduced to each knot, how and where to employ it, and when it should not be used. The author's style is so gentle and easy to follow that readers will find themselves trying and tying knots that could easily earn them a scouting badge. Information on boating, drying clothes, working on the roof safely, sewing on a button, and tying a perfect necktie make this selection more practical and far-reaching in scope than an ordinary book about string.
