Before going to the ball, a princess must pack her purse. The princess's first-person narrative invites readers to play along by removing cardboard objects, then placing them into Velcro or ribbon-tied pouches. First, her quill pen (the "ink" can be tested on an erasable slate); next, her rose-tinted cat-eye sunglasses and fan, scratch-and-sniff perfume bottles, rings, and tiara. A final surprise encourages modeling the princess's attire, while recurring requests to count shapes on each spread yield yet another interactive level. Ages 4–8. (Oct.)

Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich

This is a very large and cumbersome book (three and a half pounds) that contains seven illustrations of elaborate evening purses. All but the pink purse on the cover can be opened to add or retrieve something from inside. On the inside pages, opposite the purses, an interesting assortment of cardboard purse accessories can be pulled from the heavy cardboard pages. The very first purse contains an invitation to attend "the Royal Springtime Ball, which will begin promptly at three o'clock in the afternoon this Saturday. It will be held in the flowering Royal Gardens." The next purse is yellow with a large purple gemstone, and on the opposite page there is a large cardboard feather pen, which will write on the built-in pad inside the yellow purse. A clear plastic sheet can be raised to remove the writing. Other purse fillers are four bottles of scratch-and-sniff perfume, five thick cardboard rings and a cardboard diamond bracelet, a pair of sunglasses and a fan, a tiara and a golden key. There is a hitch to all of these treasures however. Most of the heavy cardboard playthings will have to be helped out of the book with a screwdriver. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
