Synopsis

In a self-study format that focuses on basic and clinical information as well as background science, this review introduces common disorders as they would be encountered in practice or on rounds. Conditions described include sodium and water imbalance, the effects of diuretics, intravenous fluid replacement, potassium homeostasis, metabolic acidosis and alkalosis, respiratory and mixed acid-base disturbances, and disorders of serum calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. It also presents conditions such as acute renal failure, chronic kidney disease, glomerular diseases, tubulointestinal diseases, obstruction of the genitourinary tract, urinary tract infection, and hypertension. Each section includes a summary of key points for quick reference, a variety of treatment options, and resources for further study. Although written for professionals, practitioners may also find this useful for discussions with patients. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Reviewer: B. Peter Sawaya, MD (University of Kentucky College of Medicine)
Description: This is a concise review of major electrolyte and acid-base disorders and various kidney diseases. It is a pleasant and short read for anyone interested in this field.
Purpose: The purpose is to deliver in a concise manner both the fundamental basic science principles behind the pathophysiology of renal disorders as well as the clinical presentations and manifestations of the various diseases. It is written at an easy to understand level with suggested specific time frames to complete the reading.
Audience: This book is primarily designed for medical students, physician assistants, and trainees in practically all specialties, since fundamental knowledge of kidney diseases is essential for any specialty.
Features: The book is full of interesting features. First, each of the 22 chapters has a recommended time frame for mastering the content. Second, each chapter is heralded with a set of guiding questions which the authors try to answer. Third, each chapter provides a summary of the key points highlighted in an easy to read table format. Numerous tables, figures and algorithms are used in each chapter. The fluency of the narration makes the book pleasant reading. A unique chapter is the one on intravenous fluid replacement; this is a subject that everyone assumes trainees know well.
Assessment: This is an absolutely wonderful book and excellent for medical students, physician assistants, and trainees in all the medical disciplines. It differs from other handbooks or concise manuals by providing more detailed coverage of the fundamental pathophysiology and basic science behind each disorder, which facilitates understanding. The leading questions, highlighting key points in a colorful manner, the numerous figures and algorithms, and the easy-to-read style make this book rather unique. Although the width of the pages is wider than the usual handbooks and does not make this book a true "pocket" book, the larger font and the addition of all the tables and figures make it much easier to read. I highly recommend this book to students and trainees rotating on the nephrology service.
