School Library Journal

Gr 4-6 An engaging investigation into the changing face of zoos. Beginning with a discussion of the roles and functions that zoos have played throughout history, Anderson then delves into current concerns of zoos, from financial through curatorial to public controversy. Readers are introduced to the myriad of concerned professionals who populate the zoo world: animal keepers, educators, and scientists to nutritionists, veterinarians, and gardeners. The less-glamorous but still important zoo functions of visitor services and maintenance are discussed as well. In presenting current trends in zoo management, Anderson stresses the scientific and educational functions. The concern for animal well-being is demonstrated by the application of scientific knowledge as animal curators strive to provide optimum living conditions for each species. The author concludes with a fair treatment of negative public opinion regarding confined animals. The book is illustrated with black-and-white photographs. Catherine Wood, Shelburne Museum, Vt.
