Overview

Nonprofit Management: Principles and Practice is the first comprehensive textbook written for the nonprofit management course. Written specifically for students, it is substantive and includes more than what is found in the prescriptive practitioner oriented books that have been the only choice for the classroom thus far. It provides a balanced and integrated approach to the field and reveals a variety of opinions and perspectives and attempts to view issues from multiple perspectives and drawing from various approaches selectively as situations may dictate.

Features & Benefits:

Features objectivity and its balanced treatment in areas of disagreement; i.e. it will not strike a tone that implies the superiority of using corporate strategies in the nonprofit sector, nor one that emphasizes only the risks involved in nonprofit earned-income ventures. Rather, it will synthesize the major points of voices on both sides of the debate.

Where appropriate, practitioner literature as well as research will be presented; however, the tone will not be prescriptive or directive.

Mini-cases will be included to enhance understanding of the issues using real-world situations.

Each chapter includes a section suggesting further readings, to give students direction on where to go in the literature, should they want to learn more.

Questions for Discussion are included at the end of each chapter to help students think about the relevance of what they are reading and apply it to any nonprofit organizations with which they may have personal experience.

"Your book provides great coverage of many of the topics we address, and allowed me to dispense with a lot of readings as you covered the topics more clearly and thoroughly. I like that the book is well-grounded in research and experience, yet accessible to students. The class has been a big success and I look forward to using your book in years to come."

“I like the text and the way the chapters are structured; this structure will help me plan individual classes/lessons during the course. But more importantly, I think students will find the text easily understandable and helpful to them as they begin their careers as non-profit managers…. It has much potential to contribute to students’ understandings of successful management of non-profit organizations.”
