From The Critics
Reviewer: Robin Webb Corbett, PhD, RN C(East Carolina University)Description: This is a core review of maternal-newborn nursing with numerous charts, illustrations, pharmacology boxes, and memory icons. Other worthy features include a computer disk-integrated exam and questions with strong rationales at the conclusion of each chapter which review text and other core content material.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to facilitate the review of maternal-newborn core content material with varied learning and memory cues.
Audience: It is written for nursing students to review and update maternal-newborn content using other texts for in-depth reference. It is also directed to graduate nurses preparing for certification exams in the area of maternal-newborn nursing. The authors are well known experts in the area of obstetrical/newborn nursing with numerous publications to their credit.
Features: The book has a myriad of learning cues to facilitate memory retention. Theses cues include pertinent icons, charts, illustrations, use of bold face type, pharmacology boxes, and chapter questions with strong rationales. References are current and pertinent. The table of contents, index, and glossary are reader/reviewer friendly. Unique qualities include organization, the use of varied and pertinent learning/memory clues, chapter review questions, and in-depth rationales for correct and incorrect responses. Also, the pathophysiology for high risk conditions is succinct and concise.
Assessment: This is a good review of maternal-newborn content, particularly for nursing students and graduate nurses preparing for NCLEX. Its numerous learning/memory cues, particularly the chapter questions and rationales, text organization, and integrated exam computer disk are strengths of this text. Though the text's target audience includes maternal-newborn nurses preparing for certification exams, I believe more in-depth content coverage specific to pathophysiology and medical/nursing management is necessary. Therefore, this text is a valuable resource for student nurses preparing for clinicals, graduate nurses reviewing for NCLEX, and practicing nurses seeking to update their knowledge of maternal-newborn core content.
