Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Jacqueline Hutcherson, MSN, CNM(East Carolina University)
Description: This is a question and answer review guide for maternal and newborn nurses. The multiple choice format includes rationale and identifies the corresponding nursing process step, client need category, and taxonomic level.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a review book for nurses preparing for challenging examinations in the area of maternal-newborn nursing. The objectives are worthy in order to provide a mechanism for quality nursing care by assisting nurses to prepare for credentialing examinations in their area of expertise. The editors more than meet their objectives.
Audience: The target audience is the new graduate or practicing nurse in the specialty field of maternal-newborn nursing. The book is intended for studying or for preparing for the credentialing examination. I concur with the intended audience. Both editors and the contributors are a blend of education and clinical expertise, and they provide a credible source of information.
Features: The book is organized to review maternal and newborn areas including a separate section on anatomy and physiology. The maternal component includes family planning, antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care. The best feature is inclusion of a rationale for correct and incorrect answers. Many opportunities are provided to test the reader's knowledge. Over 450 questions are available to challenge any level of expertise. A shortcoming could be that the format is boring unless the reader is preparing for an examination.
Assessment: The target audience, maternal and newborn nurses, will benefit from this updated version of a test preparation guide. Besides preparing nurses for a testing situation, the editors also promotes quality nursing by providing the rationale for over 450 questions that challenge all levels of expertise.
