Reviewer:Josie M. Bowman, DSN, RN(East Carolina University )
Description:This book, one of several Nurse's Quick Check titles, presents an alphabetical listing of diseases. The second edition includes 400 diseases, including 16 new disease processes.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide "up to the minute facts in rapid-read bullets." Each disease is covered concisely in a two-page format.
Audience:The book is written at a level appropriate for nursing students and practitioners. It would be a starting point, with more in-depth information found in other references. The consultants and contributors are all registered nurses, and most are advanced practitioners from various healthcare and academic programs.
Features:Disease conditions or disorders from abortion to Zollinger-Ellison syndrome are covered. A section at the end focuses on less common diseases and includes selected references, web resources, and the index. Diseases are covered in two pages which are organized into an overview, assessment, treatment, and patient teaching. Specific icons designate life threatening, alert, special populations, and prevention.
Assessment:This could serve as a quick reference for disorders that may occur on a general medical-surgical unit. It is a beginning source of information; other references are needed for more detail or more in-depth information.
