Overview

What went wrong in Vietnam? Applying the principles of war to the way we fought there, the author illustrates why our effort was such a disaster.

Some fatal errors: failure to learn from the Korean experience. Surrendering the initiative to the enemy. No comprehension of internal Vietnamese problems. Failure to discern how North Vietnam cloaked its real objectives behind a much inflated insurgency.

Colonel Summers wrote ON STRATEGY for the Strategic Studies Institute of the U.S. Army War College, where he lectures. He served in combat in Korea and Vietnam.
