Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Edward Abraham, MD(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description:This softcover book deals with the diagnosis and care of patients with musculoskeletal disorders.
Purpose:The purpose is to give a concise overview of common orthopedic disorders by using a question and answer format. These worthy objectives are partially met.
Audience:The book is written mainly for orthopedic residents and orthopedic clinicians preparing for recertification examinations. Medical students will find this a good reference. The editors, David E. Brown, MD, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, University of Nebraska Medical Center, and Randall D. Newman, MD, Ortho West, P.C., Omaha, are qualified to write on this topic. They are supported by scores of orthopedic experts including residents and fellows, many of whom are alumni of the Creighton-Nebraska Orthopaedic Residency Program.
Features:There are 96 concise chapters covering the most common orthopedic disorders and fractures. A chapter on total hip arthroplasty is new to this edition. The chapters, organized by anatomical site, are devoted mainly to adults. The discussions are limited to the questions presented in each chapter, so that significant information can be missing if there are no questions posed on the subject. For instance, the chapter on the diabetic foot does not discuss the role of the monofilament examination and transcutaneous oxygen levels.
Assessment:This is a good review book since it allows the reader to brush up on a great deal of information in a very short period of time. It is best suited for clinicians preparing for the recertification examination and orthopedic residents preparing for in-service and board exams.
