Synopsis
Hugely popular on its first release, and now thoroughly revised and updated, the new edition of this pocket reference guide provides a rapid and thorough practical review and reference for otolaryngology clinicians and residents, as well as other medical students. Designed in an expanded outline format, the book is a guide to the entire medical course: from work-up, differential diagnosis and symptomatology to pathophysiology, complications, and current standard of care treatment plans.
New content and illustrations appear throughout the text, and an additional chapter on allergy and immunology is included. Still in a convenient pocket-sized guide, this book remains an essential reference.

Description:This is the second edition of a pocket-sized clinical reference for the otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon. The first edition was published in 2001.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a comprehensive overview of clinical otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. This is worthy objective, and one that is achieved by the author in portable fashion, as it easily fits in the lab coat pocket of a medical student, resident, fellow, or attending physician.
Audience:The purpose is to provide a comprehensive overview of clinical otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. This is worthy objective, and one that is achieved by the author in portable fashion, as it easily fits in the lab coat pocket of a medical student, resident, fellow, or attending physician.
Features:Topics are well organized into general otolaryngology, rhinology, laryngology, head and neck oncology, endocrinology, otology and neurotology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, and trauma. This book is unique in that its information is provided in a portable, pocket-sized book.
Assessment:This is an excellent addition to the library of a practitioner of otolaryngology. It best serves as a quick reference for diseases of the head and neck, and its organization and portability are two of its best attributes. The additional and updated information justify the second edition.
Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: Patrick E Simon, MD(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)Description: This is an excellent review of the major topics in otolaryngology, effective for preparation for in-service examination and board review.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive review of the major conditions encountered in the field of otolaryngology.
Audience: It is intended for otolaryngology residents, fellows, and practitioners.
Features: What is best about this broad overview is its organization, its systematic approach, and its comprehensiveness. Unique features are the glossary and appendixes. The attempt to encompass the entire specialty in a pocket guide could be considered a shortcoming.
Assessment: This is the ultimate study resource for boards and in-service preparation. It has served me well in prior editions. It does not provide in-depth study of all subjects, but serves as a starting point for further inquiry.
