Children's Literature
This book is part of the series, "A World of Festivals." One wonders about the criteria for choosing the parties featured here from the myriad of possibilities around the world. The Gilles Parade in Belgium, Mardi Gras in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Halloween, and an Alpine Festival in Switzerland are detailed among others. A short paragraph, photograph, and approximate date is given for each party. This is not a book for a child to sit down and read. There is no overarching sense of organization. The book has large print, colorful photographs of interesting ceremonies, and bright colored pages. It has a pronunciation guide, glossary, and index. It explains and illustrates two craft ideas: a God's eye and a carnival mask. The God's eye will not turn out as presented. The purpose of this book is unclear. 2003, Chrysalis Education/Smart Apple Media, Ages 7 to 10.βCarlee Hallman
