Overview

The fifth edition of this text has been revised and re-organized to accommodate new developments in the field, with new material making up nearly 40% of the text. As an introduction, chapters are included on the developmental anatomy, biology and physiology of the kidney. Subsequent chapters are devoted to the evaluation, diagnosis and therapy of pediatric kidney diseases, with clinical algorithms included. Among the topics of individual chapters are inherited glomerular diseases, immune mechanisms of glomerular injury, cystinosis and Fanconi syndrome, renal vasculitis, diabetic nephropathy, and transplantation immunobiology. Multiple chapters are devoted to sections topics that include systemic disease, tubular disease, urinary tract disorders, hypertension, acute and chronic renal failure. Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: F. Bruder Stapleton, MD(University of Washington School of Medicine)
Description: This is a comprehensive reference on congenital and acquired kidney diseases and their therapies in children. This edition has been significantly reorganized and offers an important emphasis on the role of genetics in pediatric kidney diseases.
Purpose: When compared to adults, children are afflicted with a unique range of diseases and abnormalities, as well as requirements for care. This book is an attempt to address those unique pediatric aspects of nephrology.
Audience: The audience is pediatric nephrologists, adult nephrologists, pediatric and adult urologists, and to a lesser extent, pediatricians. It will be an essential reference for nephrology fellows.
Features: The fourth edition of this text has been reorganized and reoriented to emphasize genetics and the latest renal replacement therapies. Sections on basic embryology and physiology are excellent, as are chapters on research methodology. Although there is some variation between chapters, the overall quality is extremely high. Chapters addressing glomerular disorders are particularly well written. A new chapter addresses the intensive care management of children with life threatening complications of renal disease. Minor concerns are a few poorly focused concluding chapters on regional aspects of renal disease. Also, the binding is of poor quality.
Assessment: This is the premiere reference text on pediatric nephrology available today. The editors are to be congratulated for continuing to add significant improvements to the text without expanding its length.

Shorter, lighter, and more condensed, this fourth edition reflects advances in the understanding of the molecular basis of renal disease and in the management of end-stage renal failure. The first section describes the developmental biology of the kidney and summarizes the current understanding of renal physiology. Subsequent sections cover the homeostatic role of the kidney; research techniques; the way in which the child with renal disease presents and is investigated; details of congenital renal malformations and the whole gamut of genetically determined disorders; glomerular diseases; vascular and interstitial diseases; urinary tract disease; the relationship between the kidneys and blood pressure; special clinical problems; acute renal injury; chronic renal failure; and reports from around the world.
