Synopsis

Conceived as a practical reference for practicing clinicians, this handbook has expanded its coverage of the mechanisms by which nutrients influence and direct short- and long-term growth and development in recognition of the growing scientific recognition the long-term consequences of excesses of certain nutrients as well as the problems of nutrient deficiencies. In addition, the chapters on feeding children and adolescents discuss cultural considerations, nutritional aspects of vegetarian diets, sports nutrition, and other information not necessarily included in handbooks of the same type. Other major topics include micronutrients and macronutrients, nutrient delivery systems, and nutrition in acute and chronic illness. Each chapter contains references to the scientific literature and explores other resources that might be useful to clinicians or patients. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
