Children's Literature

This book provides an easy-to-read history of Pennsylvania. It begins with a good bit of detail on the native peoples of the areaβ€”the Lenni-Lenape and the Susquehannock tribes. Then, it describes the activities of the early explorers and settlers of the state. Finally, it tells the story of how the state was established and the modern-day government structure created. The book has numerous maps, photographs and reproductions. There is one appendix with facts about the state and then another which describes tourist sites in Pennsylvania. Finally, there is a glossary with definitions of 13 words, most related to statehood, and an annotated bibliography that includes books, websites and videos. This book works well with older elementary school children. The book is in the series "Seeds of a Nation," which profiles states and their origins. 2003, KidHaven Press/The Gale Group, Ages 8 to 12.

Gr 3-6-These titles present a brief history of the individual states, from the earliest inhabitants to statehood. Each volume discusses the native peoples of the area, the early pioneer settlers, and the establishment of the state government, along with background information on the events of the time. Aimed at a slightly younger audience than many "state" books, these titles have attractive photographs and reproductions, a map or two, and an appendix of facts about the state today.
