Synopsis

Gain an in-depth understanding of performance issues central to the planning, designing, and efficient operation of TCP/IP over ATM networks with this practical new book. Containing information essential to solving internetworking problems between TCP/IP and ATM networks, this book helps you guarantee quality of service for ATM applications and understand the enhancements required to run TCP over wireless links.

Written by internationally recognized authorities in the field, this extremely comprehensive book provides a thorough discussion of TCP/IP and ATM design principles, network protocols, packet formats and more. It covers the latest developments in this exciting field and arms you with the knowledge you need to increase internetworking efficiency and better understand the protocol overhead in running TCP/IP and ATM.

Booknews

The problem is that transmission control protocol (TCP) and Internet protocol (IP), which support the most popular Internet applications, were not developed for real-time data applications and has no quality- of-service guarantees for running in that mode; the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), which does have those features, is very expensive, so many networks run it only as a lower layer technology at the core, with TCP/IP at the edge. Hassan (computer science and software engineering, Monash U., Australia) and Atiquzzaman (electrical and computer engineering, U. of Dayton, Ohio) compile research on the performance dynamics of such systems from the various conference proceedings, journals, and standards documents, and explain some of the issues they reveal. Some background in computer networks is necessary to understand the treatment, but no prior knowledge of the protocols or the mode. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
