Description:This is a color atlas of regional anesthesia accompanied by wonderful text describing block techniques. The third edition adds a section on ultrasound.
Purpose:The authors intend this as a practical source of information for physicians who are interested in performing peripheral nerve blocks.
Audience:Although primarily written for anesthesia residents and practitioners, the atlas also covers blocks that are of interest to physicians in emergency medicine, ENT, oral surgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, and chronic pain. The author is well known in the field of regional anesthesia and has been aided by other expert contributors in writing this book.
Features:Seven sections cover all the essential information required to perform a block, dealing with all the conceivable topics in regional anesthesia and pain. The book has a very natural flow from start to end as it effortlessly covers one topic after another. The first section deals with basic nerve block techniques including set-up, physiology of nerve stimulation, and pharmacology of local anesthetics. The second section deals with bread-and-butter single shot blocks of upper and lower extremity. Each block is accompanied by a very good anatomical review of relevant plexi and nerves, which is important, as sound anatomical knowledge is the cornerstone of every successful and safe regional anesthesia technique. This section also covers airway blocks, eye blocks, and the Bier block. The third section is an overview of catheter techniques for commonly performed blocks. The fourth section covers commonly performed ultrasound-guided blocks which is a new to this edition. The next two sections deal with pediatric single shot and continuous catheter techniques. The last section covers a few pain blocks. The atlas is full of helpful illustrations, pictures, and photos of cadaver dissections. It provides a good 3D visual image of every nerve being blocked and the text is clear and brief. Every block description includes patient position, indications, needle size, surface landmarks, and then technique, followed by helpful hints for troubleshooting and ending with a list of references for a more detailed description. It mentions all possible approaches, such as five approaches to block the sciatic nerve in the upper leg region. The book does not have detailed text in a few sections, like ultrasound, but this is an atlas and not intended as a textbook. In the section on pain blocks, not every block description has a radiological image, which I consider a must.
Assessment:This well written and formatted book covers all the blocks one needs to know to be excellent in regional anesthesia. The text is concise and clear and can be read even in the middle of the night if one needs a refresher before performing a block. There are many books on regional anesthesia, but none as practical as this one, which efficiently combines an atlas and text while being comprehensive enough to include all the useful nerve blocks performed in both the adult and pediatric population.
