Overview

This is a reprint of a 1999 work. Grenfell and Kelly (both: U. of Southampton, UK) present a selection of papers from an April 1997 conference held at the U. of Southampton exploring conceptual tools developed by social theorist Pierre Bourdieu; all works were revised and edited for publication. Following an introductory essay, 24 contributions examine the advantages and limitations of Bourdieu's "thinking tools" when they are put into practice. A sampling of topics: construction of an object of research; temptations of the populist fallacy; regimes of value, cultural goodwill and the social life of books; field and habitus in intercultural communication; struggle in the S. African university field; altered habitus of mature aged students. There is no subject index. Annotation Β©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
