Overview

Guinness — the first taste is the weirdest! As it happens, regret is the word that describes Evan McHugh's first experience of the slab-black Irish beverage that is described as 'an acquired taste'. Evan McHugh twirls around the Emerald Isle in search of the perfect Guinness — it's an arduous task — and meets unforgettable characters along the way. He is sung an Irish love song that is supposed to lead to marriage (and does), he goes rowing with a flame-haired German bagpiper on the lakes of Killarney, windsurfing with a one-armed man, survives an encounter with the illicit spirit called 'poteen'. But does he ever find a pint he doesn't regard as a poisoned chalice? He most certainly does! Throw in some literature and poetry, history, incredible Irish scenery, the turmoil of Irish politics, romance Irish-style and lots of jokes and you have the makings of a lively tale.

Author Biography: Evan McHugh is a native of Sydney. As a freelance journalist, he writes regularly for the Australian. He is also the author of The Rot Stuff — (serialised for radio), several travel guides to Sydney, and a biography. I think we can safely say that he has now acquired a taste for Guinness.
