Overview
Like its predecessors, the third edition of this popular and eminently practical resource offers clinicians a truly concise reference—it literally fits into the pocket of a lab coat—that sorts through the multitude of data needed when practicing psychiatry today. A welcome supplement to standard, much lengthier psychiatric textbooks, this convenient reference includes diagnostic evaluation checklists, report outlines, and DSM-IV-TR information such as codes and drug doses. Enhanced by readily available references that give clinicians authoritative sources as starting points for more detailed study, this concise volume presents the expertise of 28 distinguished contributors in six sections: assessment, treatment, specialty areas, substance abuse, reports and prior authorization, and DSM-IV-TR and other assessment instruments. Some sections are designed to jog the memory of a clinician while interviewing a client with an unfamiliar psychiatric problem, others to assist the house officer in ordering needed laboratory tests or initiating treatment to stabilize the patient until morning rounds. In addition to its revised index and updated tables, this third edition features three entirely new topics: reproductive psychiatry, geriatrics, and herbal medicines. As with the two previous editions, clinicians are encouraged to write in the margins of this book, adding information they must look up regularly as well as notes on new and familiar drugs, laboratory tests, imaging studies, and other advances. Both wide ranging and concise, the third edition of this informative reference continues its tradition as one of the best companion sources for clinicians in their daily practices.
The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

From The Critics
Reviewer: Nicholas Greco IV, MS, BCETS, CATSM(Abbott Laboratories)Description: This is an exceptional reference with easy-to-follow lists and tables encompassing the most relevant, everyday topics within the practice of psychiatry.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a concise reference for the abundance of data available in psychiatric practice. The information is organized through a series of tables and lists that are easily accessible from the table of contents page. The authors' objectives are unquestionably met.
Audience: Intended mainly for psychiatric residents and attending physicians, this book will undoubtedly serve the needs of these mental health professionals quite well. The authors are knowledgeable and cognizant of practitioners' needs and this book is a demonstration of their professional talent in the field.
Features: This book appropriately illustrates not only the psychopharmacological treatments for the major psychiatric disorders but includes specialty areas such as emergency, forensic, and geriatric psychiatry. The checklists and tables provide the most relevant information regarding drug dosages, interactions, class, and unique features. The inclusion of the DSM-IV-TR classification and code list makes for a perfectly up-to-date pocket reference. The index is remarkably practical and the section on herbal remedies is a must read for all clinicians.
Assessment: This is a much needed revision to the second edition, given the recent changes in psychopharmacology and the addition of the DSM-IV-TR. This is a superbly practical tool that will provide psychiatrists with quick psychopharmacological information as well as practical assessment; however, it is not a substitute for more comprehensive references.
