Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck

While the Civil War was fought on battlefields, along river banks, and at sea, it was ultimately caused and won by political decisions made away from the front lines. In this volume of the illustrated "Civil War" series readers are presented valuable background information about critical political decisions that influenced the coming and course of the war. During the war an elemental political divide split North from South. That division orbited around the concept of slavery and all that went with that "Peculiar Institution." Prior to the war a series of political compromises, Supreme Court decisions, and political party platforms all combined to create the kindling necessary for the firestorm of secession and attendant war to ignite. In this volume of the well-crafted parent series the various authors provide insightful analysis of topics such as the powers of the opposing presidents, political parties in the Union and Confederacy, wartime governors, emancipation, and the Reconstruction Era. Entries vary in length from one to six pages but are uniformly well written and carefully researched. Throughout the book readers are exposed not only to the names, dates, and events involved but also the humanity behind the conflicting pathways to and through war. This combination of solid scholarship with stories well told makes this a valuable addition to a school or personal library. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
