Synopsis

Pollution occurs when harmful materials are put into the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land we live on. Not only can pollution hurt people, it can also affect every living thing on the planet! What are the different types of pollution? How can pollution be stopped so that all plants, animals, and people can live in a clean environment? Look inside to find the answers and learn how everyone can help protect Earth.

Children's Literature

The sixth title in the "Earth in Danger" series resonates with visual impact. Brief but pertinent large font text overlays numerous full spread panoramic photographs. Longer tracts with full color inset photographs accompany single page and page-plus photos that attract the eye despite the unlovely topic. Orme touches on almost every type of Earthly pollution, describing what causes it and giving specific examples of the harm it causes. New and unfamiliar terms are presented in bold type and defined in a glossary that includes pronunciations. The book vividly impresses the reader with the deadly preponderance of pollution in the world, but while the introduction states that there are many things people can do to help solve the problem of pollution, examples of pollution-mitigating efforts are only included in the last two sections, "Noise Pollution" and "The Future," and briefly discussed in back matter material. The six-page "Just the Facts" section is basically six sidebars with additional photographs that are presented after the conclusion of the book. This layout style cleverly introduces young readers to the interesting information contained in sidebars without disrupting the reading flow of the main body of the book. Reviewer: Heather N. Kolich
