School Library Journal

Gr 2–4
These visually appealing books provide information about their respective animals and the threats to their survival. However, the texts can be confusing at times as information about the animals and the dangers they face is simplified. For example, Elephants states that, "[African Elephants] live in the southern parts of Africa, on open plains and dry deserts. Some African elephants live in forests." Each spread usually includes a stunning full-color photograph of the animal in its natural habitat and a box of additional facts. The photographs are the highlight of the books. Each volume concludes with "Just the Facts," several pages of additional information, including "In Danger" and "Conservation." The tips are generally the same in each volume and range from learning about the animal to raising money for a conservation group. Consider these as additional purchases if your curriculum focuses on conservation.
