Children's Literature
The smiling, perfectly groomed, white poodle on the cover invites early readers into Lisa Trumbauer's world, highlighting the poodle as a show dog. Beginning with the "Table of Contents" page with its large, red bone and pink paw prints, the clear, colorful graphics are outstanding. The large type, short sentences, and crisp photographs help even below-level readers breeze through various chapters including "Show Dogs," "From Puppy to Adult," and "Poodle Care." A great deal of emphasis is placed on the grooming needs of this beautiful breed, with several photos depicting the dog being brushed and clipped. Poodles are shown competing in dog shows, jumping in agility shows, and as puppies in a litter with explanations of all activities listed in the "Glossary." The poodles' range of sizesβtoy, miniature, and standardβare covered. All coat color varieties are depicted as well. The "Read More" and "Internet Sites" chapters, headed with large colorful bones, offer opportunities for further study and research about this smart, active breed and may require assistance. The "Internet Sites" listing offers an invitation to visit www.facthound.com by typing in a special code for age-appropriate sites related to this particular book. This title is part of the "Pebble Dogs" set of breed-specific books. Parents, librarians and teachers will want to collect them all since each is well written, engaging, and captures the essence of the particular breed while supporting national science standards related to life science. 2006, Capstone Press, Ages 4 to 6.βDebra Lampert-Rudman
Children's Literature -
This book brings to life the world of the poodle breed. These show dogs lead a unique life compared to other dogs. They jump and do tricks. They need haircuts every two months and must be brushed often. This book is part of a series called "Perritos/ Dogs." Each section includes appropriate bites of information: two sentences in English translated into Spanish. The spare text is complemented by color photographs which appropriately illustrate the information about poodle growth from birth to adulthood and what poodles need in the way of care. The photos will help create appeal for readers. This book is perfect for classroom use. A glossary and an index at the back of the book give subject-specific words and can help readers interpret the text. Another helpful section explains how to use the Internet for further research. These books would be especially useful to teachers who want to instigate independent learning about specific breeds of dogs. Students could read these books and use information for short, written reports in a life science class about animals. Reviewer: Dorina Lazo GilmoreBook Details
