Did you know that the Eagles have the number one selling pop/rock album of all time? Did you know that Whitney Houston's song, "I Will Always Love You," is the number one pop/rock single in the world? These and other facts about the pop/rock genre can be found in this title, part of a four-book series entitled "Music." This entry includes sections on the history of pop/rock, instruments, famous performers and bands, and famous pop/rock compositions. Overall, it presents the information in an easy-to-read format. There are small information boxes, timelines, headings, and lots of color to make the text visually interesting. It also has many pictures of musical icons. While great for a quick read or for browsing, it is not suitable for more in-depth research. It really only covers the surface of the genre and presents facts that many students will already know. Additionally, the text is disappointing because it is too general and lacks detail. This is especially true in the history section. It also does not discuss the impact of this genre on youth. Youth culture and pop/rock music are closely tied together and ignoring this relationship means ignoring a major aspect of the pop/rock genre. 2005 (orig. 2003), Smart Apple Media, Ages 9 to 14.
