Editorials
School Library Journal
Gr 9-12-- A timely book that focuses on the government's efforts to provide services for those in need and includes up-to-date statistics and criteria for defining poverty and its threshold. This is not a study of the causes of poverty, but the basic philosophical differences of those who study the causes and remedies are noted. Topics range from AFDC funding to low-income housing, food subsidies, educational benefits, income maintenance, and transfer payments. Not entirely objective, Davis's tone provokes concern as well as awareness. This compact title is well organized, and the footnotes reveal careful research. Graphs; black-and-white photographs; and a glossary for acronyms, government programs, and economic terms are included. Most chapters are introduced with thought-provoking comments or case histories that promote critical thinking. Although not as easily read or as personal as Poverty in America (Morrow, 1986) by Milton Meltzer or as lengthy as the collection of arguments in Poverty (Greenhaven, 1988), this book gives good background for those studying sociology or principals of economics. --Miriam Hansen, Indianhead Federated Library System, Eau Claire, WIBook Details
