Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Ronald Hendrix, MD(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This is a new book treating the whole spectrum of shoulder pathology as evaluated by all current imaging modalities (conventional radiography, tomography, CT, MRI, ultrasonography, scintigraphy, etc.). The book contains contributions by a large number of recognized national and international authorities in imaging and shoulder pathology.
Purpose: The editor, David Sartoris, conceived of this book as a comprehensive treatise of how to use all current imaging modalities to diagnose the entire spectrum of shoulder pathology and as filling a void in the diagnostic imaging literature created by previous books on the subject that were limited by being short or focused mostly on posttraumatic abnormalities.
Audience: Although targeted for trainees in diagnostic imaging, orthopedic surgery, rheumatology, and sports or occupational medicine and as a reference book, it will be useful to any clinician who orders imaging studies or reviews imaging studies of the shoulder. The contributors are sound and credible in their areas of contribution.
Features: The book includes an abundance of high quality illustrations in keeping with the subject. The references are current. extensive, appropriate, and helpful. A large section on technical aspects of imaging and another treating normal anatomic variants and artifacts should be useful especially to trainees.
Assessment: This book fills a void in current imaging literature by being comprehensive. Because shoulder dysfunction results in significant patient-restricted functional ability, accurate diagnosis is needed that heavily relies on imaging studies. Therefore, this book will be useful both to practicing radiologists and clinicians and to trainees in multiple specialties dealing with the shoulder. Buy it!
