Description: This book contains information regarding the epidemiology, pathophysiology, biochemistry, orthopedic aspects, radiographic assessment, and treatment of osteoporosis.
Purpose: The purpose is to help clinicians identify asymptomatic individuals at risk for osteoporosis and thereby reduce the future incidence of osteoporotic fractures. A book such as this is necessary to familiarize physicians from various specialties with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis because it can affect every adult over the age of 35.
Audience: This book is written for trainees and practicing physicians from various medical subspecialties, gynecology, orthopedics, radiology, and epidemiology. Although the editor is a radiologist, he has compiled chapters written by experts from the departments of endocrinology, pathology, and orthopedic surgery representing various reputable medical institutions.
Features: The pathologic and radiographic illustrations are impressive in their detail and quality of reproduction. The figures are easy to comprehend and correlate well with the text. There is some overlap in information, especially the definition, categories, and epidemiology of osteoporosis, from one chapter to the next. The information regarding radiographic assessment could be consolidated into three chapters: radiographic-pathologic correlation, noninvasive methods for assessment of bone density, and clinical applications of bone mineral measurements. The references are current, but some authors use them too liberally.
Assessment: This book is useful and recommended not only to its intended audience but also to anyone in the medical profession who deals with osteoporotic patients, including nurses and physical therapists. Some of the information is too technical for the nonradiologist, but other medical personnel can clearly benefit from the chapters on epidemiology, pathophysiology, orthopedic aspects, and treatment of osteoporosis.
