Major features of volcanoes and their activities are fully described. The introduction features actual experiences with a volcano on the Caribbean island of Montserrat in 1995. Diagrams and illustrations portray the structure and development of volcanoes. Methods for predicting eruptions and experiences of volcanologists before, during, and after eruptions contribute to a clear understanding of volcano activity. The history of volcanoes beginning with the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79 and continuing with well known occurrences, such as Kilauea in Hawaii and Mount Saint Helens in Washington State provide background material for the studies that are continuing. The advantage of the dramatic full color illustrations is reduced because the captions are placed directly on them on a strip of contrasting color. A glossary, an index, and a bibliography of sources and web sites contribute to the value of this book for those doing research on volcanoes. Gr 7-10-Both of these books portray scientists pursuing extreme careers and describe natural phenomena that humankind still does not fully understand. Each one looks at brilliant daredevils who put their lives in danger to gather data and observe these occurrences. In the first title, researchers chase tornadoes and waterspouts using many different modes of transportation in order to document the weather conditions that cause these deadly storms. The second volume examines the work of volcanologists, whose main goal is to determine how to predict volcanic eruptions. A great deal of scientific information is included, beginning with a basic explanation of the subject and what the scientists are trying to discover, and including information on educational backgrounds necessary to pursue these careers. Both books are profusely illustrated with well-placed color photographs. Chris Hayhurst's Volcanologists and Lois Sakany and Dana Asher's Hurricane Hunters and Tornado Chasers (both Rosen, 2003) cover similar ground.
