Overview

Linda Daley was washing clothes outside her home on the Caribbean island of Montserrat. When she looked up, she saw fiery clouds shooting out of the Soufrière Hills volcano just a few miles away. Linda dropped her bucket and ran until she reached the wall of a nearby school building. She hid behind it until the wind blew the clouds away. Then she walked back to where she had been washing clothes. The metal bucket she had dropped lay on the ground, totally melted.

Look inside to find out more about Linda and other survivors of volcanic eruptions who narrowly escaped death. You'll also discover what causes the eruptions, where they occur, and-most important-how to stay safe during one of these dangerous events.

Children's Literature

When a volcano blows, running for one's life may be in order. That is exactly what Linda Daley had to do near her home on the Caribbean island of Montserrat in 1997. Quotes from Linda set the pace and accompanying photos add to the interest level in this book from the "Disaster Survivors" series. Twelve two-page spreads offer up a plethora of information about how volcanoes form and blow, how devastating they can be, where volcanoes are likely to form, and how volcanologists help predict which mountains are ready to erupt. Each two-page spread has a limited number of sentences, large, enticing photos or illustrations, and a fact box with extra information. The last spread describes how Montserrat is "digging out" and rebuilding. Short sentences written at a third grade level will appeal to students in grades two to seven. End material consists of a page with facts about famous eruptions, volcano safety, a glossary, bibliography, extra resources, and an index. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
