Synopsis

In this Level 1 first reader, Pup and Hound solve the mystery of an abandoned egg.

Children's Literature

It is springtime on the farm and many of the animals are giving birth to babies. There are new chicks, a little lamb, piglets, and a new foal. Pup is delighted and wants to play, but the mothers say their babies are too young and shoo him away. Downtrodden and sad, Pup heads to the woods where he and Hound find an egg. They try taking it to mother duck, but it is not hers. The same answer awaits them when they take the egg to the hen house. Then the egg rolls down a hill and takes flight. What a sight. The animals had seen flying birds but never an egg. Amazingly, it lands in some hay and when it hatches, it is Pup's turn to say—the baby is too young and you will have to wait to play. The illustrations are as much fun as the text. New readers should enjoy this early reader and will get plenty of help in decoding the text by looking at the illustrations. A level 1 book in the "Kids Can Read" series.
