From The Critics

Reviewer: Christine R. Curran, MSN, RN, CNA(Pennsylvania State University)
Description: This book, one in a series of quick reference volumes for nurse administrators, covers the philosophical foundations, organizational culture, and design techniques necessary for implementing work redesign.
Purpose: This book is about leading fundamental change. In today's healthcare environment, change is a constant. One key to success in managing change is the quality of the leader. Leadership, as a concept, is difficult to operationalize, but this author does a superb job by inserting practical tips for administrators.
Audience: The target audience is nurse executives, nurse managers, nurse educators, and students of nursing redesign. Although examples are specific to nursing, the content is written globally, and all healthcare executives will find the information relevant for their use.
Features: More than 60 tables and figures are contained within the text. References are current and relevant, although not comprehensive. Business process redesign and re-engineering literature is lacking. Terms included in the glossary are placed in bold print through out the text. The book indexes tables, figures, and quick reference topics immediately after the table of contents. Helpful tips are dispersed through out and boxed for ease in locating.
Assessment: This book describes fundamental processes that need to exist for organizational transformation to occur. Practical methods of facilitating the necessary changes are specified and well done. Figures and tables are very effective in conveying a lot of information succinctly. Work redesign methodologies are included. A continuous quality improvement philosophy underlies most approaches recommended. Business process redesign and re-engineering techniques are not generally included. The book is very strong in assisting healthcare leaders to understand the philosophy and skill components necessary for a successful outcome of any redesign effort.
