This book gives practical suggestions about how to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate healthcare redesign projects. The stated purpose is to give conceptual frameworks, to-do lists, advice, and tools to be used in redesign efforts. These are worthy objectives. There are no other texts that I am aware of that attend to the practical side of redesign. The book follows through with all of the stated objectives except for conceptual framework. The only framework is the nursing process framework used to organize the book. An audience for the text is not specifically indicated, although the introduction reads as though the audience is the practitioner. My opinion is that the book has three potential audiences: practitioners involved in redesign efforts, healthcare organization libraries, and nursing graduate students who are looking for research tools. The authors apparently have the expertise to write the book based on experience with redesign in their consulting business. The book contains many illustrations, which add to the presentation of the material. References seem to be current, with the only exception being references that could be called classics. The table of contents is clear and in a usable format. The ring binding on the book is helpful, especially to those who would want to duplicate some of the tools. I particularly liked the attitude of "here's what we have, use it, change it, and let us know how it worked out." It is easier to modify something than to create it! The book reads easily, language is at an appropriate level, and the writing style makes you want to keep reading. I like that the book gives practical suggestions for the entire process of redesignfrom assessment through evaluation.
