Children's Literature -
Ralph Masiello is a successful illustrator, with many books to his credit. Nevertheless, this volume does not quite live up to its promise, which presumably is to help children learn how to draw ocean creatures. Masiello's "instruction" consists largely of having the reader apparently make slow contour drawings of each of his subjects, following the author's pencil lines fairly exactly. Lively, full-color finished drawings are included with each subject, and while Masiello helpfully notes what medium he's used to render his artwork, he doesn't include any technical advice on how to use any of the media he suggests. I'm not sure that youngsters would get more out of following the elaborate "step-by-step" images than they would simply tracing the finished drawings, not a particularly inspiring instructional method. The pictures are great, but the book as a teaching tool leaves much to be desired.Book Details
