Children's Literature

All kids eventually want to have their drawings look more realistic. This book provides step-by-step illustrated instructions for drawing butterflies, spiders, caterpillars and a variety of bugs. The left page of each spread includes six to ten drawings, starting with a simple geometric shape. The right page is the finished drawing that has been colored with a variety of tools. The ladybug drawing starts with a simple oval. Two lines are added in the second drawing to indicate the two wings. A curved line is added above the oval for the head. Two additional curved lines are added to the head for the eyes. Two antennas are drawn above the head. Each insect in drawn with this progression of simple additional lines to create the finished image. A butterfly is drawn from both a side view and a top view. Instructions for the spider's web accompany the spider. Developing drawings from simple geometric shapes is an important technique used by many artists. 2004, Charlesbridge, Ages 5 to 10.
