School Library Journal

Ten chapters cover topics that include storytelling and puppetry, poetry, and research and reports. Each chapter offers the philosophy behind the activity suggested and practical strategies for making it work. Concrete ideasmaking a shadow portrait, for instance, or writing verse in the style of Ogden Nashare interspersed throughout. A problem is the lack of suggested age levels for activities. Moreover, most of the activities can be found in other sources. But the bibliographies at the end of each chapter are extraordinary, covering primarily titles from the 1990s. Elementary teachers will find Reading Activities a solid general resource. Librarians will find the bibliographies the most useful part. This would be a good selection tool for school or public librarians to help beef up their collection of educational activity books.Cathy Fithian Williams, Columbus (OH) Metropolitan Library
