School Library Journal

Gr 4-8-- While quantities of materials dealing with cleaning up the Earth have been produced, few examine specific aspects of the recycling movement as thoroughly as these two titles. Condon begins by discussing why people should recycle paper, mentioning the types that are not recyclable and why. She gives readers a basic explanation of the paper-making process, the kinds of wood pulp used, and the impact of deforestation on the world. A description of how different kinds of paper and cardboard must be separated and why gives readers a picture of the complexity of the problem. Standard full-color photographs come from recycling projects and paper mills worldwide. Palmer also covers her topic well. She explains how metal, bimetal, and aluminum cans are made and recycled; how much energy is used in the manufacture and recycling of each; and how recycling programs work. Both titles include useful addresses of agencies and organizations to contact for further information. Clearly written overviews of timely topics.-- Dorcas Hand, Annunciation Orthodox School, Houston
