Synopsis

An adult male red kangaroo is taller than most people. It can stand up to 7 feet (2.1 m) tall and weigh up to 205 pounds (93 kg), which makes it the world's largest marsupial. Despite the fact that it grows to such a big size, a newborn red kangaroo is tiny. The joey is about one inch (2.5 cm) long, or the size of a grape. It's hard to believe that such a little baby will grow up to be a king-sized kangaroo! In Red Kangaroo: The WorldÍs Largest Marsupial, large color photos and grade-appropriate text will engage young readers as they learn about the natural habitat, physical characteristics, diet, life cycle, and behavior of this super-sized kangaroo. A comparison diagram is also included to show readers the animal in relation to a familiar object.

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung

One hop moves these creatures a distance of about 30 feet. The approximately seven-foot tall red kangaroo that lives in the wilds of Australia is the largest member of the marsupial group of animals. Learn about the habitat, diet, and other characteristics of this huge marsupial. Consider its size compared to the other members of its family, such as the eastern gray kangaroo, Antilopine wallaroo, or the southern hairy-nosed wombat. Peruse the color photographs that are found throughout the book; included in the snapshots is an amazing picture of a one-month-old joey in its mother's pouch. For those students who wish to learn more about kangaroos, Lunis provides a list of books along with the address of the publisher's website which includes a crossword puzzle and serves as a portal to other related websites. This book is part of the "More Super Sized!" series which provides information about animals that are the largest in their respective families of the animal kingdom. The presentation and format of the books are similar within the series; consultants have guided the content information of the books. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung

K-Gr 3–These overviews introduce animals that are the largest of their group. Perspective is provided by comparing each animal’s size to that of humans at the beginning of the book, and to other animals of its own species at the end. The picture-book format helps to stress the point of size, allowing for full-page and -spread pictures of the animals and large range maps. The pages are decorative without being cluttered. Back matter includes an illustrated glossary and a brief-yet-varied list of further reading. Online researchers are directed to the publisher’s homepage. This series is perfect for browsing and suitable for reports. From the brown bear to the red kangaroo, the animal kingdom is well covered here in its girth and stature.
